My Review:

Chasing the Dragon is a Gangster Film Based on a Real Gangster. The film Follows a Guy named Crippled Ho played by Donnie Yen as he moves up to the top of the food chain during the British-colonized Hong Kong Day back in the 60’s and has the Scarface story line of immigrant rises from bottom of food chain. Here there are no good guys, all the Gangsters and cops are drug running including a High ranking police office named Lee Rock Played by Andy Lau whom teams up with Crippled Ho. Back Stabbings and untouchable British police running Hon Kong, Who makes it out on top?

The Film has a great story and even better cinematography that does give us that 60 and 70’s vibe. The score also helps this. Donnie Yen Playing a Gangster with hair almost looks unrecognizable due to his look and his acting. Yes he is doing a great job here acting. The same can be said for Andy Lau. The Film does have action not a ton but when it kicks in we get some nice shoot outs and hand to hand stuff. The film has a few twist and turns that you wont see coming and when viewing don’t forget to watch the scene after the credits. As said above the film is based on true events and it does get pretty crazy how things were run during this time.

Overall the film was a great watch. Even at its tad over 2 hour run time, I kind of want a little more. Some portions of the story does run fast. The whole look of the film is also great. Great costumes and when Donnie becomes the big guy he becomes bad ass with a bad ass Cain. The film is a remake and Andy Lau also played the same character in the movie Called Lee Rock made in 91 and Lee Rock 2. It’s not a classic 5 star film but its close. I do wish we had more time with the characters and the scenes where guys die we care for, I wanted to feel more sadness.

With that said I give this film a 4.5 out of 5 stars. It’s a great movie to pick up if you’re a fan of both Donnie and Andy. Donnie transforms in to this gangster and might be his best acting I’ve seen mix it with the way this film is shot, you Don’t miss out. Go and pick this one up.
