My Thoughts |
Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe is an Adventure, Monster, Fantasy film where a group of solders find a layer or new realm filled with dragon like creatures and other monsters. The story switches from 1979 to present day a few times as we recap what happen to are lead who somehow survived his ordeal while discovering a new place on earth deep underground with tons off falling and getting hurt portions. The film is heavy CGI which I know I get on Asian films for due to the quality but here we do get better. But some portions of the CGI work can still be improved upon to make things look more realistic. The Ending switches to more of a Desert scene with a shoot out to hold off the monsters and this is where are female lead changes for the 2nd time. What does that mean? View the film and find out.
Story wise the film could be confusing with all the jumping back and forth from 1979 to present day while trying keep track of the story line. What we do get is a nice adventurous 30 minutes of finding this place and exploring. The Story of the creature things is a bit odd and they could have left where they came from out of the story or change it up as its kind of takes away from the story I feel. Acting wise was good but feel the Main lead (Mark Chao) could have been better and more heroic. His Character can be a bit bland. Next to him we Fat Wang played by Li Feng who is a bit more colorful and brings the Humor in the story. The Female lead was fine but not a ton of scene time.
Overall the film was an OK Watch. The story can be confusing and its got a pretty long run time. Its and Adventure film that dabbles in other Genres. This could be a hit or miss but for me in the middle as its enjoyable at times. I just wished it was put together a bit better with tall the time changes in the film and a small cut. The film has a good Visual style we just need to shape up the story more.
With that said I give Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe a 3 out of 5. Its borderline 2.5 but I did like the adventure, the monsters, the stylistic visuals. Down side is the story needs some upgrading. Give it a shot if you’re wanting to just sit back and view an Adventure monster movie and not take it to serious.
