Synopsis

HOTTER ‘N’ COFFY MEANER ‘N’ FOXY BROWN!

Fresh off her career defining roles for Jack Hill in Coffy and Foxy Brown, Pam Grier returned to pure Blaxploitation (after turns in Blaxploitation-horror and action), in cult filmmaker William Girdler’s (The Manitou, Abby) ‘Sheba, Baby’…

Grier plays Sheba Shayne, a private eye based in Chicago who is called to her hometown to stop the local mob boss (played by “that bad D’Urville Martin”, Black Caesar, Dolemite) from moving in on her father’s loan business. Aided by her father’s partner, Brick Williams (Austin Stoker, Assault on Precinct 13, Battle for the Planet of the Apes), Sheba finds out that the violent thugs aren’t going go away with a fight. Car bombs, gun fights and boat chases ensue whilst armed with her curves, street smarts and a .44, Sheba is in for a bloodbath!

Grier would appear in three Blaxploitation classics in 1975 (the others were Bucktown and Friday Foster), where she was at the top of her game and genre, with the Los Angeles Times calling her “cool, tough and glamorous – a female fantasy Wonder Woman”, further cementing her status as the first female action star. – Arrow Video

The Sound Quality is Pretty Good, a tad Thin dialogue wise but no distortions.

Picture Quality

Disc Format: Blu-Ray

The Picture Quality is Good looking with Good sharp detail during close-ups and Colors look pretty good as they pop when they need to. The movie still hold the film grain which on some distant shots could decrease the PQ some but if you wipe it clean the PQ will look fake.

Rating: 4.5 stars

My Thoughts

Sheba, Baby is a Blaxploitation action film starring my Girl Pam Grier. A Town is being slowly taken down by an Insurance company with Sheba’s fathers business is the last in its way. We All know not to mess with any Character Pam Grier is playing.

The action is fun with the more bloody stuff at the end. Favorite scene was the chase scene in the middle of the film when they wind up in the Fair. We get gun action some hand to hand a boat chase and an Explosion throughout the film but yes the action is fun but… The Script needs work as it makes the acting not so good with its one liners and cuts need more perfection. Hey its a B movie , A Splotation film with some cheese so it’s not going to top of the line movie extravaganza. It suffers from the acting and script but its fun seeing Pam Grier on the Screen in HD kicking some ass. Good or bad any Pam Grier film should hit the shelves, as most of those films she holds what could be a bad film into an OK one or even better.

Overall the film is an OK watch. Action, some blood and guns, but No nudity and script and acting is sub par or below. Not the best Film With Pam and I have to say its my least favorite so far but don’t let that stop you from getting this. If you’re an Arrow Video collector, Blacksplotation or Pam Grier fan, then you should add this.

With that said I give the film a Middle rating of 2.5 out of 5. Add more action, better scripting some nudity more blood and we could have a better movie but thank god Pam is starring or the film would just not be worth it as she holds it up. I’m happy to have it on my Shelf
