About:

After shooting cult favourites Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula in Europe, Joe Dallesandro spent much of the seventies making movies on the continent. In France he worked with auteurs like Louis Malle and Walerian Borowczyk, and in Italy he starred in all manner of genre fare from poliziotteschi (Savage Three, Season for Assassins) to nunsploitation (Killer Nun).

The Climber follows in the tradition of gangster classics such as The Public Enemy and Scarface as it charts the rise and inevitable fall of small-time smuggler Aldo (Dallesandro). Beaten and abandoned by the local gang boss after he tries to skim off some profits for himself, Aldo forms his own group of misfits in order to exact revenge…

Written and directed by Pasquale Squitieri (Gang War in Naples, I Am the Law), The Climber is a prime example of Italian crime cinema a high-octane action-thriller full of brawls, fistfights, shootouts and explosions!

My Review:

The Climber is an Action Thriller that has a story that inspired the Film Scarface. The structure is the same with a newcomer coming into to the Crime life and he works his way to the top taking out the head of the other bosses. The story was a fun ride with good action and realistic Knife wounds and bullet holes. The Lead actor did a great job and overall acting was good in the English version of the film.

Is it as good as what follows that is Scarface? No but it hangs just below with its structure, story and action. At times it can be a slow ride but the whole criminal life in Italy with the smuggling and money taking is intriguing. Overall the film was a good watch and if your interested in the story or have enjoyed films like Scarface I would say give this one a shot. It’s not super deep into the action nor the drugs and guns but it holds its own

With that said I give this film a 3.5 out of 5. Pick it up and see where Scarface Might Have Came From.
