IT IS A MATTER OF GOOD BREEDING. REALLY.

After producing Stuart Gordon’s hit Re-Animator, Brian Yuzna (Bride of Re-Animator, Return of the Living Dead III) turned his hand to directing with 1989’s Society, and gave birth to one of the ickiest, most original body horror shockers of all time.

Teenager Bill Whitney (Billy Warlock) has always felt like the odd one out in his wealthy, upper-class Beverly Hills family. For some reason, he just doesn’t seem to fit in. But his sense of alienation takes a sinister turn when he hears an audio recording of his sister’s coming-out party, which seems to implicate his family and others in a bizarre, ritualistic orgy. And then there are the strange things he’s been seeing – glimpses of people with their bodies contorted impossibly out of shape… Is Bill going mad or is there something seriously amiss in his neighborhood?

Packing stomach-churning grue and thought-provoking social commentary in equal measure, Society is a biting horror satire which culminates in one of the most gag-inducing “climaxes”’ in all
of horror history – Arrow Video

The Picture Quality is Really good with very sharp detail and popping colors. Black levels also look good. The film still rolls with its grain but not affecting the PQ

My Thoughts

Society Is a Freaky, Weird, Flesh stretching of a good time. Fans of the Old Weird Horror films like Re-Animator and From Beyond will enjoy the freakyness that those films posses.

The Film Start a little slow with a Story of a family that slowly morphs into WTF. As the story rolls you began to think maybe all the visions this kid is seeing (Billy) us in his Own head, but when the end hits it’s not. The Ending is where we get a mass of people merging with each other with crazy looking makeup effects that you see in the 80’s. The film has some gore and Nudity but I feel if they would have doubled those things the film would be better and add some more freaky things during the beginning and middle of the film.

Overall the film was a fun view with n interesting story that gets weird. The film I would say isn’t for every one and Isn’t as good as From the Beyond but it can hold its own. Lets not forget the Packaging. Wow is it great looking. The Box is Embossed with Skin Teeth and text that Make for a great limited edition collectors set that is a must have. Even if I thought the film was horrible (which it’s not) I would still buy this just for the Packaging. Great job Arrow.

With that said I give the film 4 out of 5 and if I factor in the Packaging it would be a 5 but I don’t factor that in. Collectors it’s a must own, Horror fans of From the Beyond should go buy and for the Rest, it may or may not be for you as its pretty put there.

Note: I Know my speakers are way outdated. OPPO Blu-Ray Player is one of the best around and used in most home theaters. The Receiver is pretty good but on the line of out dated. Subwoofer is good with tons of bass but not the theater quality from a $400 Sub. Front speakers are fun with tons of power and are good for standalone’s but higher end sound (Hz) is lower quality. Overall I need to update on all speakers granted I do get decent sound out of them just the higher end falls short.
