In this unbelievably tense supernatural thriller, a foreigner’s mysterious appearance in a quiet, rural village causes suspicion among the locals – suspicion which quickly turns to hysteria as the townspeople begin killing each other in brutal outbursts for seemingly no reason. As the investigating officer watches his daughter fall under the same savage spell, he agrees to consult a shaman for answers – unknowingly escalating the situation into something far more dangerous.

Over six years in the making, director Na Hong-jin’s meticulously crafted follow-up to the globally acclaimed THE YELLOW SEA and THE CHASER (his third to premiere at the Festival de Cannes) smashed box office records upon its debut in South Korea, where fans are already making return viewings to catch new clues and debate what’s sure to be the most talked-about ending of 2016.

My Thoughts

The Wailing is a Mystery Horror that feels like a Zombie film combined with True Detective and changes as the movie dives deeper into its time limit. The film Basically is an Evil VS Good mystery with a ton of clues seen and possibly missed during the viewing which is why this film has been seen multiple times by a lot of viewers in Korea. A Town is being eating alive by its own people who have been cursed by a demon. We have several Characters this could be but clues and plot lines keep changing it up to confuse its viewer. Even until the end you are still not sure even after seeing the demon take form. Was it a Demon a Ghost, who is this ghost who is that other shaman guy, another demon? and why does he have the same camera as the demon guy?. Oh My whats going on?

The Story is pretty crazy and interesting as the mystery is pretty strong. The Director does so many things to mislead you with in the plot, background, and dialogue that you and are main lead stay confused. Now I think I know whats going on but then I’ve read discussions that bring out some of the clues in the film that I didn’t catch and it just changes. The acting was great and I have to say the little girl does a great job from playing a happy little girl to a monster possessed. We are also treated to good gore and grit. A Little bit of nudity is mixed in along with a sex scene some may find pointless but again it adds to the clue column that takes the story in a direction it needs to go. The Film is a two to three time watch so you can see more in the clues and how things may line up that you didn’t see before now you have the entire story in your head. It’s a great discussion film.

Overall the film was great watch that may miss a few viewers due to the ending and or being over two hours long and also for being a Mystery that makes you put the clues together but in the end still end up with a question mark. Yes its long but I enjoyed the ride and the still being confused as to what is what. In all honesty i wanted more and on top of it I can’t find one thing I dislike about it. The Picture quality and sound quality was pretty good, I know I didn’t do my review for above but I was to focused on the story. Its gritty and may take away from its sharpness some but its colors are vivid and sound is top-notch for the Blu-Ray.

With that said I Give The Wailing a 5 out of 5. if you like South Korean films, Mystery Horror that makes you think, a movie that makes you review it twice to catch more clues than you should pick this up. There is a reason why this was a Big hit and gets good reviews, check it out.

Time to go and re-watch this crazy piece

Note: I Know my speakers are way outdated. OPPO Blu-Ray Player is one of the best around and used in most home theaters. The Receiver is pretty good but on the line of out dated. Subwoofer is good with tons of bass but not the theater quality from a $400 Sub. Front speakers are fun with tons of power and are good for standalone’s but higher end sound (Hz) is lower quality. Overall I need to update on all speakers granted I do get decent sound out of them just the higher end falls short.
