With his surrealistic and dark, yet strangely heart-warming approach towards an unusual family’s world, DER BUNKER s director Nikias Chryssos may well be the nephew of John Waters and the illegitimate son of David Lynch and Luis Buñuel. A student rents a windowless room in a bunker home nestled deep within a forest. Here, instead of finding tranquility for his studies, the young man becomes increasingly involved in the dramas of his landlord s family. They include the stern father, his wife (whose swollen leg almost takes a life of its own) and their precocious 8-year-old son Klaus who, despite being German and “learning-challenged,” is being home groomed to become the President of the United States. Initially friendly and welcoming, the situation becomes increasingly bizarre. A funny, visually arresting and a bit unsettling modern fairy tale.

My Thoughts

Der Bunker is an Obscure Weird Film That Can be placed in different Film Genres by its viewer. You can Take it as a Horror, Syfy, Comedy, Family Drama. It’s up to the Viewer. The Film leaves open a ton of possibility’s as to what this movie is, ending in a way that makes you keep thinking. A Student looking for a place to stay a few days to Study and complete his work ends up in a Bunker that houses a Father? a Mother who may or may not be losing her mind due to an infected leg and or perhaps what the viewer is being told is true, Also we have a Boy who is not a boy I think and looks way older than 8 but still has the boyish looks who has a hard time learning unless in pain. The Student quickly finds himself pointed Tutor to Klaus (the Boy) after falling in debt…….by taking to many napkins and eating one to many buns at dinner.

The Story to this film is so different and weird that its enjoyable but I can see some Not understanding and liking the film. Artistically shot with cool camera work and Scene setup as the grungy dark and small knitted set can pull in a viewer itself. The Story has so many things going on that is never explained leaving the viewer to wonder on what this film really is. Here is my Review in Question form.

Is it Horror? a Family drama? Comedy? Does the mother really have an Alain living in her open wound in her leg? Or is she just going Crazy? Did Klaus and the Student switch roles some how at the end leaving the student on the not so bright side and Klaus now the smart young man side? Did the mother having sex with the student somehow open his mind to get his complected work done? Perhaps it was the Alien in her leg? Does she have sex with her own Son? is Klaus really their son and is he really only 8? Klaus getting sick…Was it him somehow switching minds with the Student? Whats up with the father painting a clown face and telling jokes? and laughing uncontrollably at the jokes….that he read from a big ass book by the way, Is the Mothers Breast Milk some how magical? What the Hell did I watch? I did like it Right? Yes

Overall the film was a great watch for me. A Ton of ‘what is going on’ as it’s just so out their but also good to look at thanks to the wonderfully weird visuals my eyes pick up. Klaus was fun to view on-screen, is he man or child? It’s like Martin Short as Clifford. This film will miss a few but I have a feeling it might grab a few as it did me. Did my Questioning peak your Interest? Pick up the film. Answer some of them for me.

With that said I give Der Bunker a 4.5 out of 5. Maybe I’m just feeling in a weird place or I might have been over saturated with Hollywood films I needed something like this for a Break. I will view this again to get and even better understanding of what is going on. Check the film out. Oh ,my only complaint is that this film was put out like it was in English but its German also the subtitles are SDH. Meaning Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard hearing so we get titles for like what Music is playing and or doors are creaking which got annoying at times and wish Artsploitation would have had both SDH and Non SDH subs.

Note: I Know my speakers are way outdated. OPPO Blu-Ray Player is one of the best around and used in most home theaters. The Receiver is pretty good but on the line of out dated. Subwoofer is good with tons of bass but not the theater quality from a $400 Sub. Front speakers are fun with tons of power and are good for standalone’s but higher end sound (Hz) is lower quality. Overall I need to update on all speakers granted I do get decent sound out of them just the higher end falls short.
