Synopsis

NOBODY DID IT LIKE DILLINGER!

The runaway success of Bonnie and Clyde in 1967 proved massively influential: it made stars of Faye Dunaway and Warren Beauty, introduced a new form of violence to the movies, and inspired a stream of imitators, including Bloody Mama, Martin Scorsese s Boxcar Bertha and the directorial debut of John Milius, Dillinger.

Milius presents John Dillinger as an almost mythical figure, tracing the rise and fall of the Depression era s Public Enemy Number One as he takes on the banks and the G-men, led by the infamous Melvin Purvis.

Starring Sam Peckinpah favorites Warren Oates and Ben Johnson as Dillinger and Purvis, and with a supporting cast including Harry Dean Stanton, Richard Dreyfuss and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas, Dillinger is a top drawer gangster picture: explosive, stylish and hugely entertaining.

My Thoughts

Dillinger is a Based on a true character film that is well of course romanticized and dramatized more so to make it a better movie. Nothing much to say as most Know Who Dillinger is and still to this day remains on FBI target Practice Paper. What you will find in this 70’s film is the acting is top-notch as Warren Oates fits this guy to a T with the way he handle’s him self on-screen.

The Plot/ story like I said isn’t 100 to the real story and at times to movie does kind of feel its age. Acting was great as the film has a bunch of guys I’ve seen before and was happy to see like a Younger Harry Stanton and Geoffrey Lewis. A Very Young Richard Dryfuss from What about Bob fame (For ME) and Frank McRae who you’ve seen before in films like Rocky and Red Dawn also makes a small appearance. Action wise the film was great, with realistic death scenes, shoot outs and car chases.

Overall Dillinger Was a good watch and I recommend to give it ago for the Old Gangster film fans. What could have made the film better, well they could have went into Dillinger more like tell us his story as this movie just picks up with him robbing banks. I Want to know his child hood. What I did like was the ending when they showed us how his presence is still around

With that said I give the film a 4 out of 5, it’s not perfect but it’s still a great film worth putting in the collection. Pick it up and enjoy Warren Oates.
