Synopsis

THE VEGETABLES OF DOOM!

The killer tomatoes are back! But this time around, they’re going to have to contend with late ’80s George Clooney and his wicked mullet… Is it a fruit? Is it a vegetable? Nope, it’s Return of the Killer Tomatoes!

Ten years on from the Great Tomato War, mankind lives in fear of another uprising by the waxy red menace. Meanwhile, Professor Gangreen – played with gusto by the great John Astin from TV’s The Addams Family – sets out to pursue his own evil ends by creating a burgeoning army of tomato militia men (who, somewhat conveniently, look just like regular men).

Following on from the 1978 cult classic Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Return of the Killer Tomatoes came armed with a healthy sense of its own ridiculousness and would expand upon a franchise that now comprises four films, two TV series and a video game. So what are you waiting for? Make Return of the Killer Tomatoes one of your five-a-day now!

My Thoughts

Return of the Killer Tomatoes is a sequel to well you can guess… Attack of the Killer Tomatoes a Horror comedy film dealing with Tomatoes that are now in Human form thanks to a mad scientist that deals with Tech and gen splicing. The film is very B grade in its story-line and I’m assuming its the same way with the first film. I’ve never seen this film nor the first one and I’m not sure if jumping to the sequel first is a good or bad. From reading the reviews for both this film seems to get a tad bit better rating so lets dive in.

The film is not scary but its in the horror element but more so a comedy with a good bit of sexual jokes thanks to a very sexy female lead played by Karen m Waldron. We also have man Hunk, a Very young George Clooney. We also have a very goofy plot with a Snake that acts like a dog, Humans made from Killer tomatoes that are smart but ditzy at the same time and very robotic like when acting. The film is not made for every one, but for those who love b grade Horror comedy’s on the Toxic Avenger level then this one is for you. It’s not as gritty or gory as the first Toxic film which I did enjoy as it was pretty gory. Comedy wise its a hit or miss for first time viewers who are just now checking this out and might not catch everything due to its time references (80’s). I did find my self chuckling at some of the bits and more so the more adult bits but more of a miss on the more goofy bits. Its humor is kind of like Hotshots in a way.

Overall the film was a decent view which would be of a more hit if you were an original viewer at the time of its release. But if your first time viewing this and if you into comedies like Hotshots and Know of Toxic Avengers then you may enjoy this. I’m in the middle for how feel as I found it funny and unfunny at times or more so boring in parts. It’s over the top for sure but still, Its worth viewing and adding this to you collection. Karen m Waldron for me is what made the film more watchable due to her sexiness and dialogue.

With that said I give Return of the Killer Tomatoes a 3 out of 5 and for me I don’t find this rotten. But I can see most giving it more of a Squashed tomato rating. Pop this in and enjoy the crazy, goofy and at time funny film that takes it over the top on purpose.
