Synopsis

The Stray Cat Rock series stars Meiko Kaji (Lady Snowblood, Blind Woman’s Curse) who with these five films began her reign as the badass action queen of the era. In these five tales of rebellious youth she stars alongside the gorgeous Bunjaku Han (Love Letter) and Tatsuya Fuji (In the Realm of the Senses).

In Delinquent Girl Boss, the girl gang go up against criminal organisation the Seiyu Group, following a fixed boxing match blood is shed and friendships are tested. In Wild Jumbo, Kaji and the gang get involved in a kidnapping and the robbery of a religious organisation. InSex Hunter Kaji’s girl gang go up against The Eagles, a group led by Fuji where sex and violence erupt over the treatment of ‘half-breeds’. In Machine Animal gang rivalry is once again the focus with two gangs pursuing some LSD pushers looking to move a big score. The series swansong, Beat’71, sees Kaji framed and sent to prison by her boyfriend’s father and with the help of some hippies she strives to be re-united.

Directed by genre veterans Yasuharu Hasebe (Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701’s Grudge Song) and Toshiya Fujita (Lady Snowblood) the films feature a psychedelic mix of girl gangs, bikers, sex, drugs and rock and roll with plenty of ass-kicking to boot, all captured in a delirious mash up of pop aesthetics including split screens, freeze frames, injections of colour, frenetic editing and dizzying angles, making these films a riotous joy from beginning to end – Arrow Films

Audio

The Sound Quality is pretty good For Mono. I’ve notice I don’t have to turn my Receiver volume up and The Dialogue is clear. Bass is pretty good as well making Dialogue and music sound fuller.

Picture Quality

Disc Format: Blu-Ray

The Picture Quality is good but the film does have a good portion of grain. The real good Sharpness only comes into play during Close ups and Distant shots are more smooth. The film also has some scratches and dirt as in white dots popping up

My Thoughts

Stray Cat Rock is a box set of 5 films which all don’t run together but features all the same actors and film style. The first 3 films where the best of the bunch with film 4 taking a turn with a lower star rating and the last film bringing the series of films back a little higher in the star rating. All 5 films follow the Hippie, Youth 70’s Japanese sploitation line with Acton a very little amount of boobs being shown. Meiko Kaji did a great job but even better her acting in Sex Hunter was great as she was more boss. The Last film I feel she wasn’t a lead actor as she wasn’t absent in a lot of it as the majority of the film focused on the Hippie group she ran with while she was locked up ans was playing more of a girly girl compared to the other films where she ran the gangs she was involved in and or took more control of things. Sex Hunter was the best of the bunch for me with Delinquent Girl Boss running behind it. Least favorite film was Machine Animal.

Overall I enjoyed the box set and it was nice to see Meiko Kaji back on my TV screen. With that said I give this box set a 4 out of 5 and each movie rating can be seen below.

  • Delinquent Girl Boss – 4

Delinquent Girl Boss is the start of the 5 film set that opens up in a world that has a 60’s to 70’s feel where music, drugs, sex and Girl fights Run Ramped. Two Gangs Fight it out Knife Style but what Does one have over the Other? A Knife Welding Meiko Fucking Kaji, Granted the other side Has a ton of guys involved who want the Hippie Freedom Enjoyers to get out.

The Film Is filled with a Jazzy Rock Score and few gang on gang fight sequences. At one point a Member of Meiko’s girl Gang is tortured and has her Breasticals burned by a torch. Sadly no nipple play was involved, and come to think about it I don’t think we get to see one Boob….Son of a. Now Ya Know it would have been nice as it would fit the Japanese sploitation Vibe as that’s what these films are. I’m Not mad Because we have A Knife Welding Meiko Fucking Kaji.

Overall The first film was a good watch and was nice to see Meiko Kaji on my TV screen. The first adventure that dives into One Gang overcoming another for their rights to have a good time had some good moments and fun Action bits. Off to the next Adventure Meiko Fucking Kaji Style.

  • Wild Jumbo – 4

Wild Jumbo Opens In happy Playful way with Mei (Meiko Kaji) and 3 other guys just laughing, running and playing around while they head toward a girl to spy on. The Girl is a a rich one and is going out with one of there other friends. Also The Motor Bike Chick is back which I never mentioned in the first but for like One Second and was out of place. Pretty weird to throw that clip in.. What Wild Jumbo brings to the table is, its more comedy based but with that same funky music. Less action but a fun story that involves criminal activity. No, The films don’t Seem to run that same as in, its not a Sequel and in-fact no girl gang like the first. Four guys and two girls make up the gang and no Character build up…not even one name is dropped until the end we know who they are. So Meiko’s Character might not even be called Mei.

An hour in we just have the gang having fun , Playing around, once in a while stealing things. A beach trip is set an hour in where most of the friends think it’s a fun trip, but its a trip where one guy and the rich girl are planning to rob another club. What I like about it this film is that its fun and playful with some laugh out loud parts. Another thing I like is we get to see Meiko Kaji act her age, a 20-year-old female who wants to have fun in the 70’s, Running on the beach in her bikini. Some Knives are thrown around at the end some guns are shot, but over all the film is more of a criminal youths, ripping people off and getting up to mischief type of film that twists it with humor. The ending is more Comedy based and ends like a Shaw Film.

Over all the film was fun, granted its to a real sequel and Meiko Kaji gets a name change from Mei to C-ko which is the only name we get to know. The Adventure was playful, it was fun, less gritty and less Japanese sploitation and…. Still no Nudity. But Hey, Meiko Fucking Kaji in a Bikini being playful is pretty fun in itself. Off to the next Adventure.

  • Sex Hunter – 4.5

Sex Hunter Brings the series back to Gritty Japanese sploitation with Meiko Leading an all Female Gang that’s involved with an all male gang who is harassing Mixed raced Japanese. We get the same vibe in music and we also go back to the club scene here. Meiko Kaji sporting a new name as these films are only some what related as in how they are shot and not in story. The film also sports some the same actors in the other two films, playing different roles.

Meiko Kaji is more pimp in this one with her hat and cane and is also more dark. I loved the style of this film more compared to the other two. We some cool shots like one with blood splat over the camera with a great score playing, Wished they did that more here. I loved this film a little more than the first two, It’s not because we get some shots of Boobs…Oh Yea, but the story is darker, it has a better story line and the guns come out.

Overall the film was good watch. Loved Meiko Kaji in this one, even though her screen time is less than the other films its just here role and acting in this one was great, we also get to see here go in it with a knife fight again like the first film. The adventure was dark, gritty and damn it we got to see some boobs for a brief portion. It was a fun one yes, but whats next? Lets move on to the next adventure with Meiko Fucking Kaji kicking ass.

  • Machine Animal – 3

Machine Animal stars Meiko Kaji and she is back with her signature black hat. She sure loves her marijuana Cigs, Which I forgot to say in the last film and in this film she still getting high. The story go,s a more hippie rout but still features the same music style mixed with Go Go Dancers in the club scene. The story runs with 3 Japanese guys and is supposed to be white and has a very bad English Japanese accent. The 3 guys are involved with the Vietnam war and I think they are trying to escape the war by leaving japan. They have a stash off 500 hits of acid they are trying to sell but Meiko who also got another name change – Maya runs an all girl gang who stole the stash to get high. Just like the last film Meiko’s role is just the same, maybe its the black hat.

The adventure starts with Maya befriending the three guys but again they loose the stash thanks to the all Male gang who sell the marijuana Cigs in the Go Go Club. The film has a heavier theme compared to the other 3 films but it’s not as good thanks to the odd editing here as it seems some what rushed. For me the film had a chance but it’s not as good. Not saying I didn’t enjoy it as did and as always loved Meiko Kaji. Just like the last 3 movies you will notice A lot of the same Actors in this one with role switching. Some are now bosses, one is playing a white guy….Which kind of kills the film some as he is the deserter from the war and is very Asian looking lol.

Action wise its very minimal, we only stat to see some fights an hour and some in which is basically the ending of the film.

Over all the film was an OK watch and fun to see these kids get high. Same music and style of the other 3 films helped out and No Boobs in this one. The adventure is over and it was mediocre but maybe we will have fun next time, Off to the next one ninja’s

  • Beat 71 – 3.5

Beat 71 follows a group of hippies around with Meiko Kaji part of the group who once again gets a name change. Now Meiko isn’t lead here as she inst in this film much. She gets locked up fer the murder of her friend who she was making out with when her boyfriend who is lead of an all male gang kills the guy. Now as you can see the Gang, police and Mayer are all working with each other so the movie becomes Hippies verse this town, Like Rambo but with hippies and less action.

The film has its action, its jazzy hippie music like the last films, but also its has some Boobs and a Child who is part of this hippie tribe. Mix in some more drug use guns and a better story line and you will find that this movie is better than the last but not as great as the first two. Also you will see actors here you have seen in the last 4 films in this set all with different type of roles.

Over all the film was a good watch with probably about the same amount of action the others had which all comes at the end. The adventure was hippie driven and if your like Cartman, this movie isn’t for you but for me I enjoyed the ride along with the ride from film 1 to 5 with 5 being more tamer in the wildness factor and maybe more realistic.

Note: I Know my speakers are way outdated. OPPO Blu-Ray Player is one of the best around and used in most home theaters. The Receiver is pretty good but on the line of out dated. Subwoofer is good with tons of bass but not the theater quality from a $400 Sub. Front speakers are fun with tons of power and are good for standalone’s but higher end sound (Hz) is lower quality. Overall I need to update on all speakers granted I do get decent sound out of them just the higher end falls short.
