Synopsis |
YOU BELIEVE IN REVENGE BUT I DON’T… IT NEVER ENDS
Inspired by the international success of the Dollars trilogy, and dedicated to director Sergio Leone, Cemetery Without Crosses offers a Gallic spin on the Spaghetti Western formula thanks to its star and creator, Robert Hossein (best-known to English-speaking audiences for his role in Jules Dassin’s Rififi).
After her husband is lynched by bandits, Michèle Mercier (Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath) seeks revenge and turns to an old friend, played by Hossein, for help. A solitary figure who lives in a ghost town and dons a single black glove before each gunfight, Hossein is initially reluctant but soon infiltrates the widow’s enemies to force a showdown.
Cemetery Without Crosses is a darker breed of Western, bleak and melancholy in tone amid the explosive set pieces. It also boasts an outstanding score by composer André Hossein (father of Robert) and the catchiest of themes, sung by cult figure Scott Walker. – Arrow Films
Audio/Video |
Audio Audio Language: English The Sound Quality is good for Mono no distortion on my setup even during load sounds. Gun Shots sound good and dialogue is clear. |
Picture Quality Disc Format: Blu-Ray The Picture quality is good. Sharp but not as sharp as other Arrow Films. Closeups look really good but distant shots the film grain will distort it some. I Like film grain but this film also has white and black specs along with Yellow dots and streaks that are from Chemical stains. Now you will only notice this if you’re looking. |

My Thoughts |
Cemetery Without Crosses is an Homage film to Sergio Leone. This Spaghetti western leans on the darker side and makes it stand out from others thanks to the Rape scene. The film’s Director is also the lead star and get this, His dad is also the guy who scored the film which is pretty cool. The Picture quality is good as mentioned above but still has its dirt and chemical stains as noted in the back of booklet that’s included with the film.
The film itself was good watch but it does run slow. Dialogue is minimal here and same goes for the action. This is basically a revenge film that ends like a Shaw Brothers film. As for who is good and bad, You never know even though One side does have the law with them but I feel that both sides are Bandits. The Beginning opens up with this guy who has been shot and is being chased down who is eventually caught in front of his home. Now what did he do, I don’t Know but he his hung in his wife is forced to watched. Now the wife is the one who leads the revenge but with the help of a Gun, A Guy who puts on one black Glove before every fight. Now the Wife eventually has the other sides leader’s daughter kidnapped and raped by the dead mans brothers. This is where you see how the film takes a different tone than most Westerns, The Mindset of the Avenger and Deep and dark they can get to get what they want.
Overall the film was good watch, yes it’s not the best Spaghetti western film but it holds its own by taking a different direction. I wished we could get more story on the beginning and maybe point out more that maybe both side are bad. But the story is still good and like the direction they went with this.
With that said I give this film a 3.5 out of 5 and its worth the pick up especially if you’re a Western fan and or a Arrow Film collector.
